What is Hemoglobal?

What is Hemoglobal?

Hemoglobal is a registered charity dedicated to providing medical care, equipment, and education for children around the world affected by inherited and chronic anemias. Hemoglobal consists of a coalition of international doctors and health professionals striving towards our common goal to "Make Care Fair."

Hemoglobal's clinical teams work together hand-in-hand to:

  • Create comprehensive care facilities and educate its staff about adequate clinical care for children with inherited blood diseases.

  • Donate medical supplies to pediatric wards.

  • Improve quality of care in the treatment of the hemoglobinopathies worldwide.

  • Educate patients and their care-providers about the hemoglobinopathies.

  • Develop international initiatives to study and treat thalassemia and sickle cell anemia in developing countries, the most common single gene disorders world-wide.

Hemoglobal Connect is an affiliate organization of Hemoglobal that operates nationally as its dedicated leadership, fundraising, and advocacy arm. While it functions separately, Hemoglobal Connect unites a growing network of volunteers to directly support and advance Hemoglobal’s global mission of making care fair for children living with blood disorders through comprehensive care facilities, medical supplies, provider and patient educational workshops, and research projects. The organization aids in supporting three fundamental programs: Hemoglobal Connect Campus Program, Hemoglobal Youth Alliance and the Hemoglobal Outreach Program.

Hemoglobal Connect Campus Program offers an enriching experience beyond traditional student clubs. Students gain access to skill-building workshops, personalized mentorship, toolkits and recognition through individual and team awards. Chapter members will also have the opportunity to collaborate with a wide range of experts who will provide crucial support and mentorship. These hands-on opportunities enable students to transform their passion for social impact into meaningful action that directly supports the charity, while also strengthening resumes and opening doors to future academic and professional opportunities. The program currently hosts 23 active chapters and is continuing to expand across campuses worldwide, building a growing network of student leaders committed to advancing global health equity and community-driven change.

Hemoglobal Youth Alliance is a global online community program for youth aged 12-25 that provide structured skill-building workshops, mentorship from experienced leaders, and hands-on fundraising opportunities to support Hemoglobal’s mission. All meetings are held on Zoom, so students can participate from anywhere in the world. We additionally offer in-person event options for those who are interested. Youth Alliance offers ample opportunities to earn recognition and awards for their impact. This opportunity is perfect for students who want to make a difference, earn volunteer hours, and connect with motivated peers, especially students whose schools do not yet have a Hemoglobal chapter.

The Hemoglobal Outreach Program (HOP) is a workshop series delivered in partnership with elementary and secondary schools nationwide, and led by Hemoglobal’s university student volunteers who have completed specialized training to serve as engaging and effective workshop facilitators. The program delivers a dynamic educational initiative that brings global health conversations directly into classrooms across Canada while also introducing students to Hemoglobal’s work, values in global health equity, and charitable mission.

Through this experience, university students develop valuable teaching, advocacy, and leadership skills while inspiring younger students to engage with Hemoglobal’s mission and take action in global health. The Hemoglobal Outreach Program has partnered with over 30 high school classes and is continuing to expand its reach to educate and empower youth.
